Have business intelligence and analytics “jumped the shark” with CIOs?

Gartner analyst Andrew White thinks so. In a recent post, White said he thinks the popularity of BI and analytics is “about to play out its course.”

The original source is clearer. It’s not that BI and analytics has ‘jumped the shark’, it’s that reporting alone sucks for driving return. Insight without action is worthless.

To some, “BI” includes everything to do with making a decision. That’s a bit ivory tower – in practice, it’s usually just a vehicle to present information. I think Andrew’s spot-on in that the focus is (finally) shifting away from tools to outcomes. And that’s a good thing.
